Rockii Peony Care & Planting Guide

The Secret to Lifelong, Dinner-Plate Blooms
The Paeonia rockii is celebrated globally not just for its breathtaking, dark-flared centers and heavenly scent, but for its legendary resilience. These magnificent woody shrubs are incredibly frost-hardy and, once established, will happily thrive in British gardens for a century or more.
We supply premium, mature 3+ stem bare-root crowns, grown on their own roots, not grafted. Our plants are in stock and dispatched as orders are received.
Follow this master care framework to ensure your imperial specimen thrives from day one.
1. Arrival & Immediate Care
When your bare-root package arrives, open it immediately. Your crown will look like a rugged, woody root system—this is perfectly healthy and exactly how it should sleep during dormancy. If you cannot plant it within 48 hours, store it in a cool, frost-free shed or garage, keeping the roots lightly moist but never sodden.
2. Location is Everything (The Perfect Site)
Sunlight: Select a position that receives full sun to dappled afternoon shade. At least 5 to 6 hours of morning sunlight is ideal to maximize bloom size.
Soil & Drainage: This is the most crucial step. Tree peonies must have excellent drainage. They love rich, fertile, neutral-to-alkaline loam (pH 6.5–7.5). If you have heavy British clay, dig a wide hole and blend in plenty of grit and well-rotted organic matter to prevent waterlogging.
Shelter: Position your peony away from harsh, sweeping winds that could damage the heavy spring blooms.
3. Step-by-Step Autumn Planting
Dig Deep: Excavate a hole roughly twice the width of the root system (around 50cm wide and deep) to give the thick roots room to spread.
Planting: Our mature tree peonies already have their own large, healthy root systems. Position the plant carefully in the prepared hole, allowing plenty of room for the roots to spread without bending or cramping them.
Backfill & Water: Fill the hole with your soil mix, firming it down gently with your hands to eliminate air pockets. Water deeply and thoroughly right after planting to settle the earth.
4. Ongoing Seasonal Maintenance
Winter: No protection is needed. Your Paeonia rockii is engineered for sub-zero temperatures and requires winter chill to trigger its spring flower buds.
Spring: As new growth appears, apply a balanced, slow-release organic fertilizer around the base of the plant (keep it away from the main woody stem).
Summer: Water during prolonged dry spells during its first two years. Once fully established, they are remarkably drought-tolerant.
Pruning: Never cut a tree peony back to the ground like a herbaceous peony. They grow on permanent woody stems. Only prune in late winter to remove dead, damaged, or crossing wood.
