When to Plant Tree Peonies in the UK

Timing is everything when it comes to planting tree peonies. Plant at the right time and your specimen will establish quickly, root deeply over winter, and reward you with spectacular blooms within a season or two. Plant at the wrong time and you risk poor establishment, delayed flowering, and unnecessary stress on the plant.

The good news is that the answer is straightforward: autumn is by far the best time to plant tree peonies in the UK โ€” specifically October and into November.

Why Autumn is Optimal

Tree peonies are supplied and planted as bare-root crowns โ€” dormant woody plants with no soil around their roots. Bare-root planting is only possible when the plant is dormant, which in the UK means from mid-autumn through to late winter.

Autumn planting has several significant advantages over any other time of year:

The roots establish through winter. When you plant in October, your tree peony has the entire winter to quietly establish its root system in cool, moist soil โ€” before the demands of spring growth begin. By the time new shoots emerge in March or April, the plant already has a strong root network in place to support vigorous growth.

The soil is still warm. October soil in the UK retains warmth from the summer months, which encourages root activity even as air temperatures drop. This gives bare-root crowns a head start that spring planting simply cannot replicate.

Rainfall does the watering for you. Autumn and winter rainfall keeps newly planted crowns consistently moist without any intervention. This is ideal for establishment and removes the risk of the plant drying out during a critical period.

Earlier flowering. Autumn-planted tree peonies consistently establish faster and flower earlier than spring-planted equivalents. Many gardeners see their first blooms in the very first spring after an October planting โ€” as collectors of Jing Yan and Jing Men Yan Yun have discovered.

The Ideal Planting Window

In the UK, the optimal planting window for bare-root tree peonies is mid-October to mid-November. This aligns with the plant's natural dormancy cycle and gives maximum time for root establishment before the coldest winter months.

Planting can continue into December in milder parts of the UK, though earlier is always better. If your bare-root crown arrives and the ground is frozen, store it in a cool, frost-free shed with the roots kept lightly moist, and plant as soon as conditions allow.

Can You Plant Tree Peonies in Spring?

Technically yes โ€” but it is significantly less ideal. Spring planting means the plant must simultaneously establish its roots and push new growth, which places considerable stress on the crown. Flowering in the first year is unlikely, and establishment is slower and less reliable.

If you have missed the autumn window, pot-grown tree peonies can be planted in spring, but bare-root crowns should always be planted in autumn. This is why reputable suppliers โ€” including The Tree Peony Queen โ€” deliver exclusively in October.

Can You Plant Tree Peonies in Summer?

No. Summer planting of bare-root tree peonies is not possible, as the plants are in active growth and cannot be lifted and moved without severe damage. Any supplier offering bare-root tree peonies for summer delivery should be treated with caution.

What About Container-Grown Tree Peonies?

Container-grown tree peonies โ€” plants grown in pots rather than lifted as bare-root crowns โ€” can technically be planted at any time of year, as the root system is undisturbed. However, autumn planting is still preferable even for container-grown plants, as the establishment conditions are superior.

It is worth noting that the finest Rockii tree peonies are almost always supplied as bare-root crowns rather than container plants. The bare-root method allows for larger, more mature crowns to be supplied, and the plants establish more vigorously.

Preparing for Autumn Planting

The best time to prepare your planting site is late summer or early autumn โ€” before your bare-root crown arrives. This gives you time to:

  • Choose and prepare the right site (full sun to dappled shade, excellent drainage)
  • Improve heavy clay soils with grit and organic matter
  • Dig and enrich the planting hole
  • Plan the position carefully โ€” tree peonies dislike being moved once established
