Paeonia rockii โ known as the Rockii tree peony or the Rock's peony โ is widely regarded as the most magnificent and historically significant tree peony in existence. Named after the American botanist Joseph Rock, who first documented it growing wild in the monasteries of Gansu province in 1925, this extraordinary woody shrub has captivated collectors, botanists, and garden designers for a century.
Today, authentic Paeonia rockii cultivars remain among the rarest and most sought-after plants in the world โ and for very good reason.
A Living Piece of Imperial History
Long before Joseph Rock encountered it in the wild, Paeonia rockii had already been cultivated for over a thousand years in the imperial gardens of China. Prized by emperors and scholars alike, it was considered the "King of Flowers" โ a symbol of nobility, prosperity, and refined taste. The finest named cultivars were jealously guarded in the historic peony fields of Heze, Shandong province, passed down through generations of master growers.
When you plant an authentic Rockii tree peony, you are not simply adding a shrub to your garden. You are anchoring your landscape with a living thread of imperial botanical history.
What Makes Paeonia rockii Unique?
The Dark Flares. The defining feature of every true Rockii is the dramatic dark flare at the base of each petal โ a deep purple-black marking that bleeds upward into the bloom's heart. No other peony variety carries this signature with such intensity. It creates a striking contrast against white, pink, red, or purple petals that is utterly unlike anything else in the garden โ as seen in Jing Yun Xiang (pure white with midnight-black flares) and Jing Hua Mo Guan (near-black velvet blooms).
Extraordinary Fragrance. Rockii tree peonies are celebrated for their intoxicating, sweet perfume. On a still spring morning, a mature specimen in full bloom will scent an entire garden. This is not the faint fragrance of a modern hybrid โ it is a deep, complex, heady scent that has been described as one of the finest in the plant kingdom.
Legendary Hardiness. Native to the mountain slopes of northwest China, Paeonia rockii is engineered for cold. It is fully frost-hardy to well below -20ยฐC and actually requires winter chill to trigger its spring flower buds. This makes it perfectly suited to the British climate โ far more so than many tender garden plants.
Century-Long Longevity. Unlike herbaceous perennials that die back each year, Paeonia rockii grows on permanent woody stems that thicken and mature over decades. A well-sited specimen will outlive its planter, growing more magnificent with every passing year. Specimens over 100 years old are not uncommon in China.
Dinner-Plate Blooms. Mature Rockii tree peonies produce blooms of extraordinary size โ often 25โ30cm across โ in mid to late spring. The flowers are semi-double to fully double depending on the cultivar, and each bloom lasts for several days before gracefully dropping its petals.
Rockii vs. Standard Tree Peonies: What's the Difference?
Many nurseries sell "tree peonies" โ but the vast majority are hybrid varieties bred for mass production, not authentic Paeonia rockii. The differences are significant.
Authentic Paeonia rockii cultivars carry the signature dark flares, intense fragrance, and imperial lineage that hybrids simply cannot replicate. They are also considerably rarer โ genuine named cultivars from historic Heze growers are produced in tiny quantities and are not available through mainstream garden centres.
At The Tree Peony Queen, we source exclusively authentic, named Paeonia rockii cultivars directly from multi-generational master growers in Heze. Every plant we supply is a verified specimen of imperial heritage โ not a mass-produced hybrid.
Growing Paeonia rockii in the UK
The good news for British gardeners is that Paeonia rockii thrives in the UK climate. It prefers a sunny to partially shaded position with excellent drainage, and it positively benefits from the cold winters that trigger its spectacular spring flowering.
Rockii tree peonies are supplied and planted as bare-root crowns in autumn โ the optimal time for establishment. A mature 3+ stem crown planted in October will settle its roots over winter and burst into growth the following spring, often producing its first blooms in year one or two.

Choosing Your Rockii Cultivar
Each named Paeonia rockii cultivar has its own distinct character โ from the pure white midnight-flared blooms of Jing Yun Xiang to the ethereal shifting pink-blue of Jing He Lan. Exploring the cultivars is one of the great pleasures of collecting Rockii tree peonies.
